ARCHIVE August, 2012
I’ve posted about the suffering I see here in Pignon. And it’s very real. BUT AMAZINGLY, the daily atmosphere at the Philadelphie Orphanage is one of joyful play. Here are some snapshots of playtime which, during summer break, is sunrise to sunset! Michelda moves piles of dirt around – I finally figured out she was “cooking.” Here’s the final product […]

Is WATER such a critical issue…for real?? Pastor just yelled up at me, “Sorry, Gramma Lynn. We have not water.” He’s been working on the generator all morning. But he isn’t talking about MY drinking water. He’s concerned I might not get a shower today. I’m not concerned… I have wipes, hand sanitizer, a bandana to pull back my hair. And he doesn’t let me […]

Betsy came into our room a few hours ago asking if she could sleep with us. After snuggling for who knows how long with my soon-to-be kindergartner and being trapped in the middle of a Daddy-Mommy-Betsy sleeping sandwich I woke up, searching for air in-between two hot bodies. I carried her almost 6-year old body back to her bed. Savoring the snuggles, but believing we would ALL sleep better if we […]

This visit I brought two new books with me that have been quite the hit. One is “My First English-Haitian Creole Dictionary.” The children LOVE looking through it to find pictures they can name. Each cute illustration has its Angle’ (English) and Creole name: dog/chyen, rain/lapli, flower/fle’, smile/souri. It also has the alphabet, colors and numbers 1-10/youn-dis. The crazy thing is that it seems to have even more words that they […]

Most of us have fences for privacy or containment reasons. While privacy is certainly important for the Loving Haiti compound safety is the most important reason for the construction of this fence. With issues such as poisoning or stealing kids, stealing food or other items, it’s imperative that this compounds has a fence. The school, sewing center, church and orphanage are all located on the same 3-acre property. Since the inception of Loving Haiti we have begun completing a huge, strong, sturdy fence/wall one section […]

Previous to your support, the orphanage/school/sewing center/church had power only a few hours a day, usually saving it for pumping water and for lighting the nightly church services. For years the children have been going to bed in the dark. Unable to switch on a light if they needed to go to the bathroom, if they were scared, or if they needed to get something. Once the sun went down they had very little option of doing anything other than sleeping. When they did have power, the […]

Yes, I am back in Haiti. Why so soon, you ask? Because I learned on my last visit that besides the monetary support, the various building projects, and the medicinal and other much-needed supplies donated, there is great value in the children knowing and experiencing that they are loved. I wasn’t too sure on my last visit how much help I would be with projects in the heat and throes of (somewhat) aging knees and back. […]
